They are not massive cans. The term megacan is thought to have originated on a drunken night in Berlin’s Neukölln district around 2012, when ready-to-drink spirit mixes began to appear in Germany. Typically sold in compact aluminium cans, these beverages combine a recognisable base spirit—such as vodka, rum, gin, or whisky—with a familiar soft drink like cola, lemonade, or tonic. To be officially designated a megacan, the can must be at least 330ml and the drink at least 10% alcohol.
Readily available in Spätis and supermarkets, the megacan quickly became a staple of Berlin’s public transport and afterparty scene, with an ever-expanding range that includes both alcoholic and alcohol-free varieties.
